Cormac Small is a Consultant Radiation Oncologist at
University Hospital Galway and the Galway Clinic.
He studied medicine at Queen’s University Belfast, graduating in 1996. After several years of training in general internal medicine in the NHS he moved to St. Luke’s Hospital, Dublin to train in Radiation Oncology. He became a Fellow in Radiation Oncology, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland in 2005. In 2007 Cormac began a Clinical Research Fellowship at the Cross Cancer Institute, Edmonton Canada. His research involved the use of leading technology in Radiation Oncology including MRI fusion, IMRT, Tomotherapy and PET scanning. He also started several clinical trials in Oesophageal, lung and Anal cancers and obtained over €300,000 in funding. Cormac returned to Ireland in 2009 to take up a Consultant Radiation Post in University Hospital Galway. His current specialist interests are in the treatment of Prostate and Gastrointestinal cancers and he is the lead Radiation Oncologist in Lung, Brain and Skin Cancers in the University Hospital Galway. He is an active member of ICORG All Ireland Cooperative Oncology Research Group, the national cancer research group. He has been local Principal Investigator in several trials in Lung, Brain, GI and palliative treatments in cancer. He is also the current trainer for the Fellowship program in Galway and is an active member of the Faculty of Radiation Oncology. Recently he has asked to be involved in the development of national clinical guidelines in colorectal cancer treatment. Research / Publications |
